The Glass Rose
  Process

The steps of making a copper-foil (Tiffany) process project:

1. Meet with the client. Determine exactly what they want and their budget. May have to visit the location for the installation. This is especially true in the case of full window or door panel projects.

2. Agree on the design and colors. I usually make a color drawing of the project for the clients approval.

3. Price the materials. I will visit my supplier to get the costs of the materials needed for the project. Since stained glass costs vary with color, style, etc. this is necessary for each individual project.

4. Provide the client with a final cost for the project. I require 50% of the total cost to be paid in advance.

5. Purchase the materials.

6. Make the "cartoon". This is a full size drawing of the project showing each individual piece of glass and cutting lines.

7. Trace the drawing onto a stiff medium, like thin cardboard.

8. Number each piece and cut out.

9. Trace the outline of the pieces onto the glass.

10. Cut out each individual piece of glass.

11. Grind the edges of each piece to fit the cartoon.

12. Wrap the edges of each piece with copper foil tape.

13. Put the pieces on the cartoon and solder them together on the front and back of the project.

14. Clean the project.

15. Burnish the soldered lines.

16. Clean again and wax.

17. Install the project.

As you can see, this is a time consuming effort.
